Good nutrition is very important for people with OI. Regardless of which type of OI a patient has, he or she will have a tendency to develop osteoporosis, a disease in which the bones become very porous and fragile.

A registered dietitian can help create a diet that both strengthens bones against fractures and decreases the time it takes for breaks to heal. Vitamin D and calcium are very important for ensuring bone strength

Osteogenesis Imperfecta Quotes

Reducing caffeine and alcohol intake, as well as not smoking, will also benefit a person's bones and ensure that fractures heal properly and in a timely manner.

Consume a healthy diet which includes lots of fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds, beans, and fermented dairy products such as yogurt and kefir. A diet high in vegetables promotes an optimal ratio of phosphorus to calcium.

Decrease consumption of meat and dairy products. Meat and dairy increase urinary excretion (loss) of calcium. Despite popular opinion, milk and dairy foods are not the best sources of absorbable calcium and should not be increased in the diet.

Avoid consumption of colas/sodas which contain excessive amounts of phosphorus and sugar. Excess phosphorus leads to increased loss of calcium and magnesium in the urine.

A healthy diet also contributes to maintaining a healthy weight and a person's overall health.
